Penguins and Seals

This is Percy Penguin. He is our class penguin, who is stuffed. Percy was hit by a car at Paton's Rock in Golden Bay many years ago. He was given to St Vincent Room children. We have emailed Enterprise to ask them to help us find answers to some of our questions about penguins and seals.

Dear Jim Hickey
My name is Alex and I do the weather every morning just like you do for my class. My teacher Judi thinks I am as good as you. To do the weather, I watch you every night on 1 News. I have been doing the weather for 2 years and I want to do it until I move to the next class [which is next year].
I am a year 3 but my teacher treats me like a year 4. We have class gardens and a pump track and we have a big leftover hill of clay and we are going to turn it into eco huts. We have a school swimming pool and a great big, big field which is good for playing sport. We have done lots of trips, and even met Andy Dalton. Did you know we have an adopted ship, it is M V Enterprise and they email us about what they are up to and where they are in the ocean. My favourite trip was when we went to the Boulder Bank and ambushed the second load of kids that came on the little ferry, the Waka-to-&-fro. What is it like as a weather man? What do you do before you go on TV? What do you do after you do the weather? Do you do the weather live? How many times do you go on TV each day, cause I only see you at 6.45.
I want to be in the army and be a general. But maybe generals need to know what the weather is going to do.

Kapa Haka

Kapa Haka is now on Friday morning and we have a new teacher, Whaia Tania. The first lesson was about making pois. We worked in family groups and most children completed two pois.

Visiting Artist at A.P.S

Greta McComb a local artist has been visiting our class this term to share with us her art and talent.
We are learning about artists. We all chose a great artist to study and made posters about them. Greta showed us some of her art works, she talked about why she paints and how she chooses her topics. This week we all sketched a still life of lemons and tamarillos. Greta taught us to look for shadow and light. We used our sketching pencils and then tried charcoal. It is the first time many of the new kids in our room have used charcoal! Our hands were filthy!!! But our sketches were very good.

Upgrade at Playground

The adventure playground is old and it needs upgrading, so a working bee call went out in the newsletter. It said "Help needed to pull down the cotton reels!"
One weekend some dads came to pull down the playground. The reel have been made into firewood and there is danger signs everywhere.

Rugby League

Every Wednesday 2 Auckland Point teams climb onto the bus at 12.30 and they set off.
When the 2 teams arrive they climb off the bus and sit down waiting for the instructions from coach for where we were to playing. Last week we played Tahuna School. We lost. It is a fun because it is tackling!! Thats why I signed up and also because my friends signed up too. My Cousin, Lochland also plays rugby league too! He is in a higher group so I won't verse him.
Last week Quentin got the player of the day. I wonder if I will get the player of the day this week.

Horse Riding

On Thursday I drove to horse riding with mum and Tylar. I have a brown horse, It jumped over the poles. Its fun doing the jumping. Then I picked up rings that were on the pole I had to put them in a cup. Next I looked at the fences and I saw a apple, I had to put the apple in the bucket.
I looked up and there was a plane in the sky.
I had to wear a helmet so I am safe if I fall off my horse. It hurts if I fall off the horse but its amazing how a horse can do such things.
My horse is a boy, my horse is beautiful. I love my horse because he's fun.
On Thursday after lunch I will go riding if it's sunny enough.

Tree Planting at Neale Park

Our class went tree planting at Neale Park. When we got there Richard told us about trees and asked us some questons about trees, I answered quite a lot of them. We got into groups of three, my leaders name was Sharon and we chose a tree to plant.
Mine was a macadamia. We had to put fertiliser in the hole we made.
The next tree took longer. Then we planted smaller trees. It was fun planting trees.

Poi Making

As part of our Matariki unit we made poi's. Megan's class and my class made poi's. Jasmyn and I were buddies and I got the hang of making poi's on the first one I made.
All together we made about twenty five pois for Kapa Haka. We had to make one poi each. I had to help Jasmyn make her poi because she had no idea. I helped about seven people. Caleb knows how to do the butterfly with two poi's. Thats when you swing them together. I think it was a great day making poi's.
